Thanks to the encouragement of some Peace Corps and knitting friends, I've started up a new nonprofit organization called
Global Knit.
Global Knit connects yarn with knitters and crocheters and warm handcrafted clothing with needy orphans around the global. Right now, we're about two weeks old. We're currently endeavoring to raise funds to cover our start up costs of $603. We're about 1/6 of the way there so far, but we've just started! We're hoping to raise the money by December 15th so we can apply for our nonprofit and tax-exempt status and have it be processed by the end of the calendar year 2009. If we succeed in that, everyone's initial donations will be considered tax-deductible.
At Global Knit, we consider Warm Woolies as our source of inspiration. We plan to work with knitters and crocheters to help provide warm clothing for needy kids who wouldn't otherwise have anything that isn't something that's been handed down to them or used by a total stranger. By making wool clothing, we'll give them something new and of good quality, but also something that will keep them warm - even when its wet.
I'm working with folks at the
Cedar Foundation to get some handknit socks and other garments (we're concentrating on socks at the moment) to disabled orphans and adults around Bulgaria. This is a great organization that helps take care of children and adults that are typically hidden away and forgotten so I'm thrilled to be able to team up with them on this project.
Right now we're concentrating on raising funds for our start up costs and are equipped to accept online donations via our website at
www.globalknit.org. After the new year and once we're officially a nonprofit, we'll collect yarn and knitwear.
Won't you please check out our website to learn more about us? Sign up for our newsletter and / or make a donation while you're there. We appreciate all you do for us!
Take care and happy knitting!
